Dandelion Root

From root to flower, dandies are highly nutritious plants loaded up with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and even some protein. Dandelion greens can easily be prepared like spinach, kale, collard greens, chard, beet greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, arugula, and many others.

Cooked or raw, dandelion greens are an excellent source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Vitamin E, Folate, Magnesium, Calcium, Potassium, Iron, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, Selenium, Phosphorus, Sodium, Boron, Iodine, Chromium, Molybdenum, Vanadium, and Thiamin.

What’s more, dandelions offer a significant amount of several important nutrients, including Iron, Calcium, Magnesium, and Potassium. In fact, one cup of chopped dandelion leaves provides about 20% of your daily requirement of Calcium, 25% of your daily requirement for Magnesium, and 30% of your daily requirement in Potassium.

The root of the dandelions is rich in the carbohydrate, inulin, a type soluble fiber found in plants, that helps support the growth and maintenance of good gut bacteria in your digestive system. Dandelion roots are often dried and made into teas, but you can also just chew on the entire root.

How does a dandelion root from your back yard get rid of bloating?  Well, lets find out…

A recent study found that eating dandelions can lead to increased urine production. Although it’s been used for centuries as a diuretic, the herb doesn’t work like most pharmaceutical drugs.

The plant contains substances called saponins, which are similar to those found in soap. These compounds make the root taste bitter, making it unpalatable to humans.

However, some people do eat dandelions because they believe the root helps cleanse the kidneys.

In one study, participants drank eight mL of dandelion extract every morning for seven days.

After taking the supplement, the group experienced a significant increase in the volume of urine produced.

Although this study wasn’t a controlled experiment, the findings suggest that dandelion might actually be effective for increasing urine output.

If you use dandelion regularly, talk to your doctor about whether you should continue doing so.

Therefore, dandelion root acts as a diuretic and in consuming it in the correct amounts, you increase your urine output which assists in resolving or decreasing bloating!

Recipe Instructions:

  1. Put the dandelion root in a pint jar that has been sterilized. Fill the jar to the very top with vodka covering the roots completely.
  2. Close the jar tightly and shake it. Store the jar in a cool dark cabinet and shake it several times every week for about 6 to 8 weeks. If any alcohol evaporates add more vodka so the jar will stay full to the top.
  3. Slightly wet a piece of cheesecloth and place it over the mouth of a funnel. Pour the entire tincture through the funnel into another sterilized pint jar. You’re going to squeeze the liquid from the roots ringing the cheesecloth until no more liquid comes out. Dispose of the roots and transfer the finished tincture to a dark colored glass bottle.
  4. Whenever bloating is a problem, take one teaspoon orally, one to two times per day. This can be mixed in a glass of water or juice if the taste is too strong for you.
