Best 5 Herbs to Use in Spells!

A lot of us are looking forward to a new year and new beginnings and casting some beautiful spells and intentions for the new year. But what about those things that you want to change or eliminate? What about those habits that no longer serve you well?

I’ve been working with some clients lately who are thinking about changing up their lives. They are asking questions like: “What do I really want?” And “How can I best align my actions with my values?” These questions bring me to the topic of setting goals and creating intention around the year ahead.

I’m often asked how people can incorporate herbs into their spell work. There is something very powerful about incorporating herbs into your life. You can feel it. You can smell it. You can taste it. You can see it. When you take the time to learn about the properties of different herbs and how they work within the body, you begin to understand why certain herbs can help you achieve your goals and how you can use them in spell work with intention to manifest what you desire!

This month I am sharing some tips and ideas for using herbs to set intentions for the coming year. If you’d like to join me in exploring the power of herbs, check out the blog below!

Basil

Basil

1. Basil for Protection Spells!

In ancient times, basil hung in doorways to protect homes and families from evil spirits. Basil is still used today to keep pests away from gardens. And now, it’s being used to help set intentions for Magical Spells.

“If you travel to the past, you’ll notice basil hanging in doorways,” Basil has long been associated with good luck, prosperity, protection, purification, and fertility.

When you place basil around your house, you’re essentially creating a protective barrier against negative energies. You don’t want to invite those things in.

To make a simple herbal protection charm for use in this Basil Protection Spell, take one handful of dried basil leaves and add three drops of essential oil to a bowl. Lightly mix together and then roll up the mixture into a ball. Place the ball in the center of a piece of paper and fold over the edges. Tie with red string and hang outside your doorway. You can repeat this process every day throughout January to ensure a prosperous and healthy new year.

LAVENDER HERBS

2. Lavender for Happiness!

The history of lavender dates back thousands of years. In ancient Greece, people used it to treat respiratory ailments, headaches, and even insomnia. They believed lavender could help you dream better, too. Lavender oil is often mixed with essential oils to make room fresheners, because it’s known to kill bacteria and fungi.

In medieval times, lavender became popular throughout Europe. People used it to flavor food and drinks, and to put in clothing to keep insects away. It was also used in medicine to heal wounds and relieve pain.

Today, lavender continues to grow in popularity. There are many ways to enjoy lavender. You can use it in cooking, fragrance, cosmetics, home decor, and even in your garden.

There are many ways to enjoy lavender. From making tea blends to enjoying scented candles, there are endless possibilities. Lavender essential oil is one of the most popular uses for this beautiful plant. Lavender is known for its calming effects and soothing fragrance. Lavender is often used to help relax and calm us during times of stress.

To make a Happiness Spell, in a mortar and pestle, mix lavender oil with some fresh sprigs of Lavender, combine with a few drops of water, and place in a sachet.  This can be kept bedside or in your delicates drawer to keep the fresh, uplifting aroma of Lavender near you all day to keep your vibrations and happiness at high levels!

Rosemary

3. Rosemary for Cleansing!

Burning rosemary releases the fragrance, bringing with it the energy of new beginnings and renewal. In ancient times, people believed burning rosemary could ward off evil spirits, keep away illness, and even cure infertility. A few drops of rosemary oil added to bath water can make your skin soft and smooth. Rosemary tea helps relieve stress and anxiety, while adding a little rosemary essential oil to your pillowcase can help you sleep better.

One way to create a Rosemary Cleansing Spell is to use rosemary to purge your space of negative energy and usher in positive vibes. You can either burn a whole bunch of rosemary or diffuse the essential oil directly into your environment.

Another way to use this beautiful Rosemary herb in the Rosemary for Cleansing Spell is to light a candle or burn a bundle of rosemary every night before bedtime. This practice helps you prepare mentally and emotionally for the next day. Rosemary is known for its ability to promote restful sleep, so this is a great way to end the day feeling refreshed and ready for whatever lies ahead.

4. Pine for Healing!

Winter fills our souls with magic, and there’s nothing like a snowy hiking trip in a pine forest, where the only sound is the crunch of snow beneath our feet. For many people, winter brings a sense of renewal; it helps us heal from the stresses of the previous year, and start anew. Pine trees are known to help do just that, and here are three ways that pine can aid in this journey of personal growth.

The practice of herbal medicine dates back thousands of years, and many people still use herbs today, including those living in rural areas and especially those who practice Witchcraft. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, 80% of the world population relies on traditional medicines for primary health care needs.

Research suggests that pine is one of the most effective plants for treating stress and anxiety, and it helps relieve depression. Studies show that pine increases serotonin levels in the brain, helping to regulate mood. A study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology found that pine increased positive feelings among participants, while another study showed that pine helped reduce negative thoughts about oneself.

While pine is very useful for emotional healing, it can also provide relief from physical ailments. Research shows that pine reduces inflammation and pain and improves sleep quality. Additionally, studies suggest that pine relieves symptoms associated with fibromyalgia, such as muscle stiffness, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping.

If you’ve been feeling down lately, try making some pine tea for use in a Pine for Healing Spell. Simply put 2 cups of boiling water into a teapot and add 3 tablespoons of dried pine needles. Steep 10 minutes, strain out the leaves and you will have a pine tea water.

To this tea water, add fresh pine needles.  Add a green candle to your altar and light it. Set intention for healing.  Mix around the pine needles in the water for several minutes while setting this intention.  Blow out the candle and your spell is set.

Cinnamon

5. Cinnamon for Success!

Success is often defined differently depending on whom you ask. Some people think of success as having money, while others think of success as being happy. For some, success is simply getting what they want out of life; for others, success is finding meaning and purpose in one’s work. Whatever definition of success you choose, there are many ways to achieve it.

One way is to use cinnamon. This spice has been used throughout history to promote health, vitality, and good luck. In fact, the ancient Egyptians burned cinnamon sticks over their dead bodies to ensure that they could travel to the afterlife safely and successfully. Today, cinnamon is still associated with positive energy and bringing good fortune into your life in addition to being used by those who practice Witchcraft all over the world.

To make a Cinnamon for Success Spell, add a teaspoon of cinnamon into water.  Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil.  Light a candle, preferably a yellow candle.  Additionally, while you are setting intention for this Success Spell, I recommend you hold pyrite and citrine.  Pyrite and citrine are two of the most powerful crystals for manifesting success.
